Rob Dorinson (second from right) is afflicted with ALS. He and his family and friends helped make the 2011 Walk n’ Roll/5K Run for ALS of Nevada so successful. One of his goals is to make sure that ALS of Nevada continues to raise enough money to become self-sustaining. He knows how important ALS of Nevada’s services are to patients, caregivers and families.

Given the progressive nature of the disease and the differences in how it attacks each patient, he understands just how important the free clinics are in Las Vegas and Reno. Whether the patient is affected in their limbs or their speech, the multi-disciplinary medical team can help treat them.

TWO TIPS FOR THOSE AFFLICTED WITH ALS

If you live in Nevada and are suffering with ALS, please call 702-777-0500 or email admin@alsofnevada.org to understand all the services that ALS of Nevada can provide you.

Also, there’s a wonderful website, http://www.patientslikeme.com/als/community that can provide insight into the disease through other patients that afflicted with ALS.

Sometimes it takes several of the medical team members to come up with a new plan for a patient. Here the dietician and speech pathologist work together to determine next steps for an ALS patient with nutritional and language issues.

NUTRITION SOLUTIONS
ALS of Nevada offers a loan closet of ergonomic aids, including eating utensils, speech enhancers, button fasteners, long straws, and an automatic feeding station to assist patients in compensating for the loss of basic functions due to the disease’s progression.

COMMUNICATION SOLUTIONS
Many technological devices that allow patients to better communicate when the ability of speech has been lost are loaned free. Dynavox, alphabet boards and Tobii are among a few of the communication devices for loan.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) of Nevada is an independent, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization striving to improve the lives of those living with and fighting ALS throughout Nevada, one patient at a time. The organization started in 1998. The board of directors and executive director raise funds through events, corporate donations and sponsorships, grants and the generosity of individuals.

ALS of Nevada’s primary goals are to:

Help the Nevada ALS patient and family/caregivers live as full and normal a life as possible.

Aid patients through the loan of equipment or by other means.

Serve as a liaison, linking the ALS patient to available resources and information.

Educate and inform the general public as to the nature of ALS.

Every year we read the names of Nevada ALS patients who have left us and then release balloons into the sky in their memory at the Walk n’ Roll in Las Vegas.

Patients like Maureen (Wendy) Rockenfeller, 55, of Boulder City, Nevada, who passed peacefully from this life on February 8, 2012. Wendy is survived by her adoring husband, Uwe; her cherished children, Kirsten and Justin; brother, sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” is a progressive invariably fatal neuromuscular disease that attacks the nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. With all voluntary muscle action affected, patients in the later stages are totally paralyzed, unable to speak, swallow, or breathe. As the disease progresses the simplest movements such as walking, speaking, eating and traveling quickly become nearly impossible. Every 96 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS. Current estimates are that between 20,000 and 30,000 people are living with ALS in the U.S. Difficult to diagnose, there is no known cure.
