New Gene Mutation Discovery by ALS Association
Consortium is Major Research Breakthrough
(February 26, 2009)In one of the most significant breakthroughs in the recent history of ALS research, a consortium of scientists organized and funded by The ALS Association has discovered a new gene, ALS6 (Fused in Sarcoma), responsible for about 5 percent of the cases of inherited ALS. The discovery will provide important clues to the causes of inherited ALS, which accounts for 10 percent of all cases, and sporadic ALS, which occurs in individuals with no family history of the disease and accounts for the other 90 percent of cases diagnosed.

Fantastic they are making breakthroughs! With my mother having gone through the ordeal of this horrible disease, a cure in my lifetime (too late for her) would be so wonderful!!

Thank goodness there are folks like you out there educating us, while others are researching the causes and cures! I have two close friends who have lost a father and the other her spouse to this sad disease.

Yes! This is great news! I also find it amazing that only 3 people run the organization for the entire state. Super people they are!

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to update you on an upcoming event for ALS of Nevada. Our 2nd Annual Steve Rigazio Memorial Golf Classic will be on April 27 at TPC Summerlin. There are still a few open golf spots and sponsorship opportunities available. Last year this event was sold out, not many golfers get a chance to golf at this outstanding course. Sign up on our website or give the office a call. Have a great day.

Today more than ever public policy is so important. Please call, write or email your state Senators. Last October the President signed into law the ALS Registry Act. Now we have to keep up the hard work, getting it funded. This is the only way we will know how many lives are actually being taken by this horrible disease. Encourage your Senators to push for more funding. It is the only way we will ever get the money need for research and a CURE.
